I'm a fan of Tezuka's work, but I loved this movie. I think it successfully translated the manga to the screen. The character of Astro himself is a triumph. He's got heart to spare, and Freddie Highmore did a great job as his voice; his performance is Oscar-worthy. The animation was superb IMO, and the characterizations, while somewhat altered (Dr. Tenma's in particular; but then he was pretty brutal to Astro in the manga, so I can completely understand why the screenwriters chose a softer version for the movie), but they all work. My only prob was the rather obvious political satire, which I think the film didn't need, but it didn't sink the movie. And the music was epic (although I wish the original Astro Boy theme song had been used in some way). All in all this movie ranks a 10 out of 10 with me. I'd love to see a sequel.
