1:1 Kobe Tetsujin Project Complete!

Construction on the 135 million JPY ($1.4 million) Kobe Tetsujin Project, an 18 meter (60′) tall monument to Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor) weighing 50 tonnes is finally complete. The statue, which is part of the ongoing renewal of the Kobe area since the devastating earthquake, will be formally unveiled on October 4th 2009. Tetsujin 28, a giant robot under the command of Shotaro Kaneda (Johnny Socko) is the brainchild of Mitsuteru Yokoyama, a Kobe native. The first giant robot to appear in a manga (in 1956), the stories were later adapted into several animated television series beginning in 1963.
