ITRI’s “Baby Seal Pup” robot gets Nothin’ but Net
Ok, so Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute’s robot is actually just a robot arm with a stuffed baby seal toy pulled over top, but it’s October and Halloween will be here before you know it, so I guess robots get to dress up too.
In any case, the robot uses Eye to Motion visual servo technology (co-developed by ITRI, Japan’s Tokyo University, National Chiao Tung University, & National Tsing Hua University) to perceive the basketball net’s location in space and throw the ball with the right strength to score a basket nearly 100% of the time.
The technology could be used to improve the speed and accuracy of robotic arms during the sorting, manufacturing, and packaging of products on the production line.
