Honda is developing a new 5-fingered, hydraulic robotic hand that uses a system similar to that seen in a car’s brakes to bend the fingers. Using only one motor for five fingers, it measures 16cm (6.2″) long, 9cm (3.5″) wide, and weighs 380 grams (0.8 lbs). The finger tips have pressure sensors which detect how much force it is exerting on objects, up to about 1kg (2.2 lbs) – double that of ASIMO’s current hand. In the future, miniaturization and smoother movement should be possible. If the project proves successful, it will no doubt be implemented into Honda’s humanoid robot ASIMO, allowing it to perform more varied tasks than before.
