Variety is reporting that Dreamworks is planning to make a live action 3d movie based on Ghost in the Shell, likely in a bid to ride the oncoming wave of James Cameron’s Battle Angel. Also note the recent murmurs of a live action remake of Akira, and one can easily imagine a new Hollywood trend to offset the sliding popularity of Super Hero movies. You know you’ve hit the bottom of the barrel when there’s talk of a Green Lantern movie.
Seeing as how the screenplay is by the same writer/producer of the horrible Bionic Woman tv reboot in 2007, I don’t have any faith that they’ll be able to pull this off. As I said in my recent review of the original animated adaptation, Ghost in the Shell represents the sort of sci-fi that Hollywood cannot make. If they’re smart, they’ll get Leon’s Luc Besson and Natalie Portman back together for this, a combination so alluring even the most jaded fanboy couldn’t resist. Until then, I’m guessing it’ll be yet another Americanized bastardization that, coincidentally, is but a shell of its former self.
