・SCHEMA

Waseda University’s Kobayashi Lab unveiled SCHEMA at SIGGRAPH Asia 2009, the latest in a line of robots specializing in natural spoken language communication.

The robot has a charming humanoid upper body mounted to a wheeled mobile base, and gave a quiz in English to attendees, who probably wondered when the Japanese speech synthesis would be implemented.  SCHEMA’s true conversational capabilities are therefore a bit of a mystery, but Kobayashi Lab has been involved in this technology for at least the past decade so it’s probably safe to be optimistic.  A video and a photo follow after the break.
