Team Osaka’s continued work on the VisiON robots led to the VisiON TRYZ, debuting in 2006. This name is a bit of a pun since it can be taken as the number 3 as well as tries (”tries to win”). The robot is 90% black (as a result of new RoboCup regulations) and has 25 DOF total (7 per leg, 4 per arm, 2 for torso, 1 for neck).
Despite being the tallest of the VisiON robots, TRYZ is still well within the ”kid size” league’s maximum height of 60cm, standing approximately 49.5cm tall. Despite being larger than NEXTA, it weighs only 2.7kg because of its carbon fiber frame, which is stronger and lighter than the previous models. TRYZ also features an embedded CPU running Windows XP on a small, 500 MHz AMD Geode processor.
Despite the previous years’ success, continuing to compete in RoboCup was not an easy decision in 2006 due to the City of Osaka withdrawing from the project. The total costs (including R&D and staff) is approximately $300,000 per year, but luckily Vstone and Systec Akazawa decided to continue the project, footing the bill themselves. As a result, they once again took home the Louis Vuitton Humanoid Cup for best humanoid robot.
Team Osaka is made up of various organizations including companies and universities: Osaka City, Vstone Co. Ltd., Osaka University Intelligent Robotics Lab, Systec Akazawa, ROBO-GARAGE, and ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communications Lab.
