Kitakyushu National College of Technology’s storytelling robot, Ninomiya-kun, is being demonstrated at a robot industry fair in Kitakyushu. Teams from Kitakyushu National College of Technology, along with those at Waseda University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, have been working on improving the robot’s emotional emphasis. It now tilts and nods its head expressively when reading. The robot’s name was inspired by a historical figure known for his work ethic, often depicted carrying a bundle of wood on his back while reading a book. In keeping with that, the robot now carries some wood on its back as well.
The researchers admit that Ninomiya-kun is only reading at an elementary school level, and with middling grades at best, since it sometimes misreads certain words.
